Course Information

Annual safety training for personnel maintaining wildland fire qualifications.

RT-130, Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher, uses the Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (WFSTAR) program to reinforce the safety knowledge and practices used by wildland fire personnel.

The refresher emphasizes situational awareness, hazard recognition, risk management, entrapment avoidance, and fire shelter readiness. Instructor-facilitated discussion, case studies, and practical exercises help students apply lessons to real operations.

Topics are selected using the current year's WFSTAR materials, agency requirements, and local operational risks. This is continuing safety training, not an entry-level wildland firefighter course.

RT-130 completion is one component of maintaining qualifications. It does not replace the Work Capacity Test (WCT), position-specific currency, or agency certification requirements.

Refresher Focus

  • Current WFSTAR annual safety topics
  • Lessons learned and incident reviews
  • LCES and situational awareness
  • 10 Standard Firefighting Orders
  • 18 Watch Out Situations
  • Fire behavior and changing conditions
  • Risk assessment and communication
  • Entrapment avoidance
  • Fire shelter inspection and deployment practice
  • Emergency response and crew coordination

RT-130 and the Work Capacity Test are separate requirements. Any WCT offered in conjunction with this class must be announced and administered separately. Qualification and Incident Qualification Card issuance or renewal depend on the applicable certifying organization’s standards.
